Oracy

Oracy is articulating ideas, developing understanding and engaging with others through speaking, listening and communication.  Through a high-quality oracy education children learn through talk and to talk. This is when they develop and deepen their subject knowledge and understanding through talk in the classroom, which has been planned, designed, modelled, scaffolded and structured to enable them to learn the skills needed to talk effectively.

At Rose Street Primary, we have been working with Voice 21, a national Oracy charity, since 2022.Our vision is to create an oracy rich community where every voice is valued and all members have the knowledge and skills to effectively articulate their opinions and explore ideas. We want to empower our pupils to have the confidence and emotional intelligence to communicate successfully throughout their lives. Oracy is weaved throughout our curriculum, and is an integral part of how we provide our pupils with an effective education.

The OracyFramework, devised by Voice 21 and Oracy Cambridge, provides a framework through which we can understand what constitutes good speaking and listening in different contexts. It breaks down the skills within oracy into four distinct but interlinked strands: physical, linguistic, cognitive and social & emotional.
